Personal Note

I feel privileged to be a part of the Memphis community. This city and its people have become my home and extended family. I look forward to growing spiritually and professionally in this nurturing environment. My interests are golf, golf and more golf. I also enjoy music.

Education and Training

A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Surles also attended medical school there. He finished in 1996 and, while in medical school, earned his Master of Public Health in Health Policy Administration. After medical school, he was an internal medicine resident at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, where he also served as chief resident in his last year.

In 2000, he began a fellowship in gastroenterology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Hospitals, which he completed in 2003. Dr. Surles has worked for Special Olympics International, where he developed the Olympic Games rulebook, and was a teaching assistant in the Science Enrichment Program at Chapel Hill.

He was certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and gastroenterology in 2001 and 2003, respectively.
